What Is An Estradiol Test And What Are Its Uses?

Introduction

An estradiol test is used by fertility doctors in fertility centers to measure the hormone estradiol in an individual’s blood. Estradiol is a form of the hormone estrogen. In the female body, the ovaries, breasts and adrenal gland are responsible for making estradiol. During pregnancy, the placenta also makes estradiol.

The Function of Estradiol

Estradiol helps in the development of female sex organs, which include:
  • ·       Uterus
  • ·       Fallopian tubes
  • ·       Vagina
  • ·       Breasts

What Is Estradiol Test Used For?

Experts at a leading reproductive fertility centre say that an estradiol test is ordered by a fertility doctor if and when a female or male sex characteristics aren’t developing at the normal rate. An estradiol level that’s higher than normal indicates that puberty is happening earlier than usual. This is a condition known as precocious puberty.
Lower levels of estradiol may indicate late puberty. The test can help your doctor find out if there are problems with your adrenal glands. It can also help determine if treatment for hypopituitarism, or decreased function of the pituitary gland, is working.

IVF doctors use estradiol testing to look for the causes of:
  • ·       Abnormal menstrual periods
  • ·       Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • ·       Infertility in women

Women who are pregnant or on infertility treatments have to go through regular estradiol tests to help keep track of their progress. An estradiol test usually isn’t used alone to make a diagnosis. However, the results of this test may help your doctor decide if further testing is necessary.

An estradiol test is available at most fertility and IVF centres in Delhi.
