IUI vs. IVF – A Comparative Review

IUI vs. IVF – A Comparative Review

When a couple finally decides to take the help of a fertility center’s or fertility doctor’s services, they are likely to come across several options through which they can achieve their goal. The foremost of these options include IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), IVF (In-vitro fertilization) and surrogacy. People wishing to carry their own child themselves and not wishing to use a surrogate are left with either IUI or IVF. Here comes the comparison. Which is better?

The answer to this question is not exactly straightforward. It depends upon several factors like the medical history of the couple, the problem that is preventing them conceiving naturally, and their personal choices, obviously, among other things. The best way to know is to formulate an answer yourself through a detailed comprehension of what each of these methods entails.

IUI

IUI involves directly injecting a female’s uterus with her male partner’s sperm.Typically, IUI is conducted at the time of ovulation. The most appropriate time for the procedure is around a day before or the same day when ovulation starts. If two IUI’s are scheduled then they have usually spaced at least 24 hours apart.IUI treatment is quite a promising process to conceive a child. It is not very costly and there is hardly any discomfort. It’s only potential disadvantage is that its success largely depends upon the female’s age, health condition, and fertility.

IVF

The IVF procedure goes something like this. Eggs and sperms are extracted from the couple and fused in the lab outside of the body. Once embryos are formed, they are transferred into the female’s womb. If all goes well and the embryo implants itself into the uterine wall or endometrium, pregnancy is attained. IVF doctors from some of the best IVF centers in India warn, however, that IVF comes with its own baggage. The procedure is expensive and asks for a lot of time and trials. Don’t expect to be successful on the first try.
